We can only speculate what the reasons may have been for traveling under the name Helseth. Helseth was the name of a farm located near Thorsrudhagen, about one mile from Aas Church.

He was an a farm laborer after 1893 in Lafayette County, Wisconsin.⁽³⁰⁾ He lived with and worked for Swiss farm families. It was there that he learned how to milk cows. He emigrated to America on Aug 7 1893 in Argyle, Wisconsin.⁽³¹⁾ Documentation of their Utflyttede (leaving record) indicates they were listed on the steamship MELKA's passenger list. When the three young travelers got off the ship, Mauritz had the equivalent of three dollars and fifty cents remaining in his pocket (1999). He gave his two sisters a dollar-fifty each, informing them that from that time on they would be on their own.

Mauritz had left his father and step-mother in West Toten, Norway, at age seventeen and one-half to travel to America. Because of military conscription in Norway, it was a common practice for young men to emigrate before reaching age eighteen. Soldiers for the infantry were selected from the census rather than by the farm. Soldiers were assigned to the front line for their first five years of service, then finished up with four years behind the lines, and in the reserves for yet another four years. He resided at a log building with whitewashed walls. in 1901 in near the Big Drywood Church, Cadott, Wisconsin.⁽³²⁾ He resided at a farm in 1938 in northeast of Stanley, Wisconsin.⁽³³⁾ He died on May 22 1948. He was buried in Big Drywood Cemetery, Cadott, Wisconsin. He was also known as Morris Christianson. Morris was a happy-go-lucky person who loved to talk and tell stories. At neighborhood dances and wedding parties he was frequently the caller for dances such as the circle two step. Besides farming, he worked in the woods during the winter months cutting logs to make some extra cash. Parents: Christian MATHIASSEN and Johanne Karine CHRISTIANSDATTER .
