bulletRobert CANCE was born on Dec 29 1822 in Wigton, Scotland. He was educated in 1834 in Milngavie, Scotland at the "New School" at the bridge. His teacher was Rev. David Young of Muirkirk, then a divinity student of the United Secession Church. He was a book deliverer for Blackie & Sons before 1858. He emigrated to Trempealeau County, Wisconsin on May 12 1858. Robert and his wife Christina sailed for the United States aboard the S.S. Glasgow. They settled near his brother John Cance and sister Martha Purvis. He resided at Section 31, Township 20, Range 7 after May 12 1858 in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. In 1860 he had 25 improved acres and 75 unimproved acres worth $800. The value of his machinery and implements was $25. He owned two milk cows, two oxen, and four other cattle, for a value of $275. On his farm, he raised 60 bushels of wheat, 40 bushels of corn, 8 bushels of Irish potatoes, 10 tons of hay, and he made 200 pounds of butter. In May, 1860 he was burned out and they moved into their new home in July, 1860. In 1870 the value of his real property was listed as $5200, and the value of his personal property was $1850. He was a farmer after May 12 1858 in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. He was a Presbyterian in 1859 in Galesville, Wisconsin at the Galesville Presbyterian Church. Robert and Christina were charter members of the church. He was naturalized on Oct 8 1866. He was elected as county boardmember between 1868 and 1874 in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. He was the chairman of the Board of Supervisors in 1870. On November 14, 1871, the Trempealeau County Board adopted the rules by which the affairs of the county have since been conducted. He was elected as state assemblyman for seat 82 on Oct 12 1882 in Madison, Wisconsin. Robert served the Wisconsin state assembly as a Republican. During this time Jeremiah Rusk was the Govenor of the state. He was a merchant in May 1884 in Galesville, Wisconsin. Iver Pederson sold his hardware and drug store to Robert, and the new business was called Robert Cance & Son. Due to Robert's ill health, most of the business was left in charge of his son James. He died on Apr 10 1887 in Ettrick, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. He died of Asthma. He was buried in Pine Cliff Cemetary, Galesville, Wisconsin. Robert Cance had a portrait made in Milngavie. He had a letter of recommendation dated July 8, 1855, and signed by the minister of Balfron. Robert had accounts with the Union Bank of Scotland in May 1854 and the Savings Bank of Glasgow in 1854 thru 1856. In June, 1883 Robert and his son James went to Chicago to visit a specialist. He returned to Ettrick and rapidly improved, but had learned he did not have rheumatism. In early December 1883, Robert went to Nebraska for his health and he stayed until the end of March, 1884. While in Nebraska, Robert probably stayed with his sister Martha Purvis. Robert was a member of the Galesville Lodge of the I.O.O.F. Parents: Alexander CANCE and Mary BIGHAM.

He was married to Christina EDMOND on Mar 9 1858 in Balfron, Stirlingshire, Scotland. They were married by her brother the Rev. John Edmond. Children were: Mary CANCE, James Edmond CANCE.
