bulletAlexander CANCE was born on Nov 20 1838 in Strathearn, Scotland. He emigrated to Richmond, Virginia about 1854. He resided at Sections 25 and 36, Township 20, Range 8, Town of Ettrick in 1858 in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. In 1858 he came to Trempealeau County with his mother to join his brothers John and Robert. He boarded with Martha Purvis, his sister, for a year or two. He was a presbyterian in 1859 in Galesville, Wisconsin at the Galesville Presbyterian Church. He was a charter member of the church and for many years a ruling elder. He was a Cane Mill operator in Mar 1882 in the Ettrick Cane Mill, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. Alexander and James Edmond Cance purchased the McEwen Cane Mill in March 1882, renaming it the Ettrick Cane Mill.. They manufactured maple syrup in the winter months, and in September 1882 the Ettrick Cane Mill was running day and night grinding sorghum. He resided at Shiocton, Wisconsin between 1898 and 1906. Alexander and Agnes were members of the First Congregational Church in Shiocton, Wisconsin, where Alexander served as a deacon. He was a farmer between 1898 and 1906 in Shiocton, Wisconsin. He retired in 1906 in Shiocton, Wisconsin. He died on May 10 1916 in Shiocton, Wisconsin. He was buried in Pine Cliff Cemetary, Galesville, Wisconsin. bullet James Edmond CANCE was born on Dec 22 1864 in Ettrick, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. He was described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed 140 pounds in 1880. He was a pharmacist on Jun 5 1890 in Ettrick, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. James was the owner of the hardware and drug store on Main Street. James and Verna lived above the store. The newspaper said the brick work on the J. E. Cance store was finished in June 1896, and that he had the distinction of having the first brick building in town. Near the top of the building is spelled out "J. E. Cance" and "1885." The building still stands in Ettrick. He died on Feb 18 1920 in Ettrick, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. He died at his home following an attack of Influenza, which developed into bronchial pneumonia. He was ill only two weeks. He was buried in Pine Cliff Cemetary, Galesville, Wisconsin. His funeral services were held from the home, conducted by Rev C. H. Phipps, paster of the Galesville and Ettrick Presbyterian congregations. He was educated in Galesville, Wisconsin at the Galesville University. In 1888, James and his mother Christina took a trip to Scotland and England to visit Edmond relatives. The trip occurred at the time of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. James kept a travel diary. They left Ettrick, Wisconsin on May 22, 1888 by train to Chicago. They then took another train to New York on the 24th of May. On Friday, May 25th they sailed for Glasgow, arriving on June 7th about noon. They immediately left by train for Balfron, Scotland, arriving there at 5:35 p.m. The Cance's stayed with Christina's sister and family, making excursions from there to Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. James went hiking with his two cousins from Balfron in the lovely country around Loch Lomond. On their visit to Glasgow, the Cance's visited the Crawfords, McEwens, Gilfillans, and the Faulds. Among the places visited in London was St. Paul's Cathedral, the British Museum, Zoological Gardens, Tower of London, Madam Tussaud's Wax Works (which he found very life-like), Hamton Court, and Greenwich, where he set his watch. James sailed up the Thames to Kew Gardens and back. There was a "Pan Handle Conference", a gathering of preachers from all over, and James spend three or four days listening and recording his comments of their speeches. James visited the Crystal Palace Exhibition several times. They visited the Rev. John Edmond and his family, and attended Highbury Church to hear him preach. In all, they spend 20 days in London, then returned to Balfron. On August 22nd they sailed for New York aboard the S.S. City of Rome, arriving August 31st, and catching a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. They spend a few days in the city and James walked around the reservoir in Central Park where he saw statues of Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott, the menagerie and baseball games on the Green. On Sunday he went to Brooklyn to hear Mr. Hamlin from Wisconsin preach, and to walk around Greenwood Cemetery. They left for Wisconsin on September 3, 1888.

James Edmond Cance was a member of the Beavers Reserve Fund Fraternity, the Brotherhood of American Yeoman, and the Modern Woodmen of America. He was one of the original stockholders in the Ettrick & Northern Railway, a director of the Ettrick Bank, and a stockholder in the Galesville Bank. He was also one of the organizers of the Ettrick Lumber Company, a member of the school board, and one of Ettrick's most substantial citizens. Parents: Robert CANCE and Christina EDMOND.

He emigrated to Jersey City, New Jersey before Nov 7 1854.(14) He resided at Freeport, Illinois before Apr 25 1855. He resided at Beaver Creek on May 25 1855 in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. He resided at Section 36, Township 20, Range 8 West on Jan 21 1856 in Beaver Creek, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. When John came into Beaver Creek Valley he built a log cabin. The cabin had a thatched roof of wild grasses so that is resembled the low thatched cottages of Scotland. There were few settlers in the valley in 1856, and wolves could be heard howling on the hills. John was virtually the first settler in the area, along with his brother-in-law Andrew Purvis. He was a Farmer at his farm in Beaver Creek on Jan 21 1856. He was a Presbyterian in 1859 in Galesville, Wisconsin at the Galesville Presbyterian Church. He was a charter member of the church. He died on Aug 22 1885 in Beaver Creek, Trempealeau County at his home. Alexander Cance was appointed by the court to be the executor of the John Cance estate. He was buried on Aug 24 1885 in Pine Cliff Cemetary, Galesville, Wisconsin. The Rev. Dr. J. Irwin Smith officiated at the funeral. The 1860 Agricultural Census says he had 40 acres of improved land, and 160 acres unimproved. The cash value of the farm was listed as $2000.00 and the value of his machinery and implements was $50. John owned 4 horses, 2 milk cows, 4 oxen, 6 other cattle, and 4 swine. The total value of his livestock was listed as $450. On the farm was produced 300 bushels of wheat, 40 bushels of corn, 100 bushels of oats, 300 bushels of Irish potatoes, 200 pounds of butter, and 14 tons of hay for that year.

Ettrick Township was created from the Town of Gale, on December 16, 1862. The first town meeting was held at the home of John Cance, on April 7, 1863. He was responsible for naming the township after the Ettrick Woods of Scotland. He was the first Postmaster. Parents: Alexander CANCE and Mary BIGHAM.

When orphaned at the age of 12, he was taken in by his cousin Mary Cance Ashley.
